What is outdoor therapy?

Outdoor Therapy can encompass a range of approaches, from Adventure therapy, Bush Therapy, Wilderness Therapy and Nature-Based Therapy. My way of working outdoors is best described as Nature Therapy or Outdoor Therapy, read on to find out more.

A Personalised Approach

Every individual is different so my approach is adapted to meet you depending on what you bring. My approach draws on Adventure Therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), Solution Focused Approach, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Existential, Attachment Theory, Wilderness Therapy Skills, while maintaining the interpersonal process (the therapeutic relationship), and working to the BACP (British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy) Code of Ethics.

Why take therapy outdoors and into nature?

In our modern day lives, we are suffering from nature deficit, and nature has been *proven to bring many benefits to our mental wellbeing and overall health. In re-learning that nature is not separate from us but a part of us, it offers us a mirror to our lives, which can guide and teach us.

Outdoor sessions respect all the regular boundaries of confidentiality and safety, but they are a very different experience to being in a room. It can feel expansive and enlivening to bring nature and movement directly into one’s therapy. Being physically active helps to release tensions, process emotions and stimulate the mind. Nature freely offers its healing presence.

Who can benefit from outdoor therapy?

I support adults and young people who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship struggles and spiritual issues. Outdoor therapy sessions are ideal for:

  • Busy professionals who struggle to find balance

  • Individuals seeking connection with nature

  • Those wanting an experiential approach or help but haven't found traditional office sessions to be helpful.

  • Individuals who struggle with anxiety and fear which inhibits action and pursuing their dreams

  • Individuals struggling with identity, worth or lack of meaning

  • Students/Young adults

Where my outdoor therapy sessions take place

My outdoor therapy sessions take place in and around Brighton and wider Sussex.
Stanmer Park
If you live in or near Brighton and use mostly public transport, I can meet you in Stanmer Park due to its great transport links via bus and train. It also has parking if you prefer the park over the woods to meet and more locally.
Woodsmill Nature Reserve

If you have access to a car, a different and more wild location for outdoor therapy sessions is Woods Mill Nature Reserve. Here it is much less crowded than a park, and a nature reserve with beautiful spaces for reflection and connection to the natural world. It is less than 20 minutes drive from Brighton.
