What is outdoor therapy?

Outdoor Therapy can encompass a range of approaches, from Adventure therapy, Bush Therapy, Wilderness Therapy and Nature-Based Therapy. Each has it's unique theoretical model, structure and outcomes, with Adventure, the client might be being scaling a wall, or canoeing down a river, and Wilderness usually involving a residential element over a number of days, weeks or months.

I am an Integrative Therapist, meaning I draw on a mix of modalities and approaches. I trained in Taking Therapy Outdoors and Wilderness Therapy in the Pyrenees. I work with nature, so it is an element of the therapeutic relationship.

We live our modern lives disconnected from nature, going from one 4 walled space to the next, unaware that this unnatural environment could be having a negative impact on health.

Green prescribing is now being rolled out in the UK, recognised for it's many benefits - Lowering cortisol (stress hormone) improving focus & regulating our nervous system.

Why outdoors?

In our modern day lives, a need to come into  relationship with nature is pivotal, and has been proven to bring many benefits to our mental wellbeing and overall health. In re-learning that nature is not separate from us but a part of us, it offers us a mirror to our lives, which can guide and teach us.

Outdoor sessions respect all the regular boundaries of confidentiality and safety, but they are a very different experience to being in a clinic room. It can feel expansive and enlivening to bring nature and movement directly into one’s therapy. Being physically active helps to release tensions, process emotions and stimulate the mind. Nature freely offers its healing presence.
